Sárán Ó Maolagáin & Muirine Nic Róibín are a duet whose music on concertina, fiddle and clarinet sits in a liminal space influenced by traditional Irish music, European folk, and contemporary genres. They perform a largely original repertoire of their own compositions, and their sound is characterised by its stretching and warping of structures, textures and harmonies.
The unique instrumentation Sárán & Muirine make use of really makes their duet stand out. Muirine’s fiddle and Hardanger d’Amore playing blends beautifully with Sárán’s unique chordal concertina style. Moreover, their novel combination of clarinet and concertina is a rare and satisfying sound in Irish traditional music. The brightness of the steel reeds of the concertina melds with the mellow smoothness of the clarinet’s cane reed. The album was supported by the Arts Council Deis Recording and Publication Award 2026.
Is ceoltóirí iad Sárán Ó Maolagáin agus Muirine Nic Róibín, a sheinneann le chéile ar an gconsairtín (Sárán), maraon leis an bhfidil agus an chláirnéid (Muirine). Tá fuaim ar leith cruthaithe acu, atá fréamhaithe i gceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann, ach a bhfuil tionachar an cheoil thraisiúnta ó thíortha eorpacha eile air, maraon leis an gceol comhaimseartha freisin. Seinneann siad a gcuid ceoil nua-chumtha den chuid is mó. Lúbann an ceol na structúir choitianta sa chaoi ina bhfuil meascán uirlisí neamhchoitianta, béim ar an gcomhcheol, agus amchomharthaí aiteacha ann. Dá réir sin, tá fuaim thathagach, nuálach le cloisteál.
